SECURIX Developed Product

Ansible Automation Library

A versioned Ansible automation library that standardises deployment, configuration and upgrades of the Elastic Stack, keeping every environment auditable and reproducible.

Solution overview

The Ansible Automation Library is a SECURIX-developed collection of reusable automation for deploying and maintaining Elastic environments. Installation, configuration, certificate handling and recurring changes are defined as code, allowing teams to apply them consistently across environments. It also supports configuration as code for content within the stack, including detection and alerting rules.

Your business needs

Your Elastic environment needs consistent lifecycle management

Repeatability

Manual installations and environment-specific scripts make deployments harder to reproduce and scale.

Configuration control

Different settings across environments create configuration drift and make changes difficult to trace.

Upgrades and certificates

Recurring upgrades and TLS management require specialist attention and controlled execution.

Who this is for

Platform and engineering teams

Medium to large organizations operating on-premises or hybrid Elastic environments, particularly across multiple nodes or deployment stages.

Head of IT infrastructure / Head of platform engineering

A reusable automation framework to improve standardization and reduce recurring engineering effort.

Elastic Engineers / DevOps Engineers

Versioned roles and API modules for deployment, configuration, upgrades and maintenance.

Security Engineers / Detection Engineers

Version-controlled management of detection rules, alerting rules and security configuration.

Our deliverables

Versioned automation for your Elastic environment

Delivered as the Ansible collection securix.observability, with two complementary layers.

Two layers

  • Platform lifecycle at host level — Installation, configuration, upgrades and certificate management for Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, Fleet Server and Kafka on Linux hosts.
  • Stack configuration through APIs — The elastic_stack_config role manages Elasticsearch, Kibana and Fleet configurations through APIs, optionally in GitOps mode.

Roles included in the customer release

  • elastic_repo — Configures Elastic repositories for .deb and .rpm packages.
  • elasticsearch — Installs, configures and updates Elasticsearch, including transport TLS, keystore, plugins, users and licence management.
  • elastic_stack_config — Manages Elasticsearch, Kibana and Fleet configurations through APIs, optionally in GitOps mode.
  • kibana — Installs and configures Kibana on supported Linux systems.
  • logstash — Deploys Logstash, including configuration, keystore and the required dependencies.
  • fleet_server — Deploys Fleet Server and enrols it.
  • kafka — Installs and configures Kafka clusters.
  • java_cert_store — Automates the management of Java certificate stores for secure communication.

  • Elastic licences
  • General infrastructure provisioning
  • Cloud infrastructure provisioning
  • Managed SOC and ongoing operations
  • Designing observability or detection use cases
  • Unlimited custom development
  • Operating system baseline configuration

The library does not provide Terraform-style state management.

How it works

From configuration to repeatable deployment

  1. Agree components, environments and the lifecycle tasks to automate.

  2. Review operating systems, platform requirements and the customer OS baseline.

  3. Pin the collection version and define inventory, variables and configuration.

  4. Check the agreed deployment and configuration tasks in your environment.

  5. Integrate the automation into your operational and GitOps processes where agreed.

Automation capabilities

Lifecycle and configuration managed as code

Elasticsearch

Installation, configuration and rolling upgrades with cluster-health checks and downgrade protection.

Kibana

Installation, configuration, plugin handling and encryption key management.

Logstash

Installation, configuration, dependencies and keystore management.

Fleet

Fleet Server deployment, policies, outputs, packages, enrollment keys and agent upgrades as code.

Kafka

Kafka cluster installation and configuration, including ACLs.

Elastic repositories

Standardized configuration of .deb and .rpm repositories.

TLS and certificates

Transport CA and certificate generation, distribution and expiry-based renewal, plus customer-supplied HTTP certificate distribution.

Host settings

File-descriptor and memory-lock limits, JVM heap, paths, service user and group.

Stack configuration

Templates, mappings, ILM, pipelines, security roles and users, Kibana Spaces, data views and saved objects.

Security Content as Code

Detection and alerting rules, with a tag allowlist in GitOps mode.

Observability and AI

Synthetics monitors, ML jobs, inference endpoints, Agent Builder resources and Elastic Workflows.

Technology partners

Automation built around your Elastic Stack

The library supports Elastic lifecycle and API configuration tasks, using Ansible for repeatable execution.

Compatible automation platforms: ansible-core 2.16 and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform 2.5 and 2.6.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know before your automation project starts

No. The tools are complementary. The library focuses on Elastic Stack deployment, configuration and lifecycle management. Terraform remains the preferred tool for Elastic Cloud infrastructure provisioning.

Yes. The elastic_stack_config role supports version-controlled detection and alerting rules, alongside other Elasticsearch and Kibana configuration. The workflow and scope are agreed for your environment.

Yes. The collection archive can be installed locally. Operating-system compatibility, dependencies and the deployment approach need to be confirmed for your environment.
